Lauterbrunnen - The Valley of Waterfalls

In the Lauterbrunnen Valley, once formed by glaciers, 72 waterfalls are located. Amongst them the highest waterfall in Switzerland, the Mürrenbach Falls at a hight of 417 metres and the wellknown Staubbach Falls. In the warm summer winds the waters swirl around, so that the water of the Falls spray in all directions. These droplets of water spray gave the brook and the waterfall its name: Dust Brook Falls.

From Lauterbrunnen Station an aerial cableway takes you up to Grütschalp. Then continue either by the Grütschalp Railway or by a hike of about one hour to Mürren, the village on the cliff's edge above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. A stroll through the village takes you to the Schilthorn aerial cableway.

Schilthorn (Webcam / Weatherforcast / Photo Gallery Summer | Winter)

The Schilthorn [2'970 m] - or James Bond Mountain «Piz Gloria» - is probably the best view point of the Alps in the Bernese Oberland. But snow and ice lovers must note that there is no snow in summer and no ice at all. Thanks to the James Bond Movie «On Her Majesty's Secret Service» the development of the summit with the last section of the aerial cableway and the revolving restaurant could be finished in 1967, and does now attract not only the fans of James Bond. Attractions on the summit: Skyline View, Bond World, 007 Walk of Fame, Revolving Restaurant. Attractions on Birg: Thrill Walk and Skyline Walk.

On the way back you may walk down from Mürren to Gimmelwald and from there take the ropeway again to the valley. The yellow postbus then takes to another unique spectacle of nature.

Trümmelbach Falls (beginning of April until beginning of November only, and if time permits)

Loud thundering and roaring in the interior of the mountain, gurgling, foaming and churning water: these are the Trümmelbach Falls. They are Europe's largest subterranean water falls. The Trümmelbach Falls are the world's only glacier waterfalls that are accessible underground by lift, galleries, tunnels, paths and platforms. The Trümmelbach alone drains the glacier defiles of Eiger (3967 m), Mönch (4099 m) and Jungfrau (4158 m) and carries the meltwater of the glaciers down to the valley - up to 20'000 liters of water per second. The water carries with it over 20'000 tons of boulders and scree per year and causes the entire mountain to shudder and make a thundering noise. The impressive Trümmelbach Falls are part of the Lauterbrunnen Valley's 72 waterfalls, some of them quite spetacular. Remark: Trümmelbach Falls are not suitable for persons with a walking disability.
