General Information

On this page and its subpages you find some useful information and good to know things about Switzerland and travelling there, includig your visa application.

About Money

The Swiss Franc is the currency of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The official code of the Swiss Franc is CHF although the abbreviations Fr and SFr are in common use in the everyday life. (The CH in CHF stands for Confoederatio Helvetica, the old Latin name of Switzerland). The smaller denomi-nation, a hundredth of a Franc, is called Rappen (Rp). There are banknotes in 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1'000 Francs. The coins come in 5, 2, 1 and 1/2 Franc as well as 20, 10 and 5 Rappen. Images of the currency you find here by clicking on banknotes and coins.

Usually the exchange rate is slightly better if you buy Swiss Franc with Thai Baht in Thailand. The exchange rates CHF vs THB of the past few months you may check here. In Switzerland you may change THB to CHF at banks and larger railway stations. Each time you change cash money, there is an exchange fee of CHF 5.00 to pay.

About Credit Cards

master- and visacard logo

Mastercard and Visacard are widely accepted in Switzerland. In most shops and restaurants these credit cards can be used. Inquire at your local credit card issuer which exchange rate to the Swiss Franc CHF and what fees will apply for payments made in CHF.
However to buy some things in smaller shops and kiosks like water, picture postcards, stamps and the like some cash is always needed.

About Time

Swiss time is five hours behind Thai time, from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October, as in most other countries in Europe (Central European Summer Time: CEST). During winter Switzerland is six hours behid Thailand (Central European Time: CET). So 3pm Thai time is 10am Swiss time during Summer, and 9 am during Winter (see clocks on the right).

About Electricity

In Switzerland the electrical power is distributed at a voltage of 230 V and a frequency of 50 Hz (Thailand 220 V / 50 Hz). So all your electrical appliances will work in Switzerland without any problem.

But the plugs used in Thailand (Type A and B) won't fit to the sockets in Switzerland. There is a special type of plug/socket in use throughout Switzerland and Lichtenstein, as nowhere else in Europe. It is the plug and socket Type J. The general European plug Type C (europlug), which is also found in Thailand, does also fit in Swiss sockets. If necessary Jui's Homestay can provide adapter plugs which connect Type A and Type F plugs to Type J sockets. Thailand A Thailand Type B Schuko Plug Type F Europlug Type C Switzerland Type J
